Why it works

Rooted in the Himalayan yoga tradition, 2-to-1 breathing uses the simplest possible ratio to maximize parasympathetic activation: your exhale is exactly twice the length of your inhale. This clean ratio is easy to maintain without counting fatigue, making it ideal for use in bed before sleep. The extended exhale phase activates the vagus nerve more effectively than any other breath ratio studied, shifting the autonomic balance firmly toward rest and digest. The smooth, continuous flow with no pauses keeps the mind from wandering, gently guiding you toward the threshold of sleep.

2-to-1 Breathing

  1. Breathe in through your nose for 3 seconds.
  2. Breathe out gently for 6 seconds.
  3. No pauses — smooth and continuous.
  4. When comfortable, progress to 4:8 or 5:10.
